ARTIST PROFILE

Richard A. Byrnes enjoys both abstraction and the literal qualities of representation. His style reflects how he is experiencing life on a particular day or the thoughts and concepts explored over sets of months and years. Like many artists, Byrnes’ work is autobiographical dealing with themes directly related to his life.

Early on, in the M.F.A. program at Columbia University, Byrnes explored abstraction. Post graduate school, while experiencing some career success, Byrnes went through a life-is-good period, reveling in the wealth and suburban environment of Greenwich, Connecticut. Following the optimism of success Byrnes developed a great love affair with all things outdoors. Perhaps this could be attributed in part to Byrnes great love of windsurfing, skiing, and other physical hobbies. This was to be tempered suddenly when Byrnes son Doug died. Once joyful work evolved into works whose message conveyed mourning and loss through the medium of lithography.

Subsequently, as a widower, Byrnes painted the diametric opposition of art's idealism and life's reality. In his new life, born of tragedy, Byrnes began to hear music in color. Byrnes often finds himself painting color plays that he finds rooted in melodic sequences. Byrnes’ most recent work includes colorful monotypes and abstractions based on fly-over views of the American landscape.
